Message from Library Director Carolyn Rawles-Heiser

November / December 2005

The Corvallis City Council sets goals at the beginning of each two-year term. This term, they developed a goal relating to library services, for the fi rst time in many years. The goal states that the City will “evaluate strategies to maximize delivery of parks and recreation, youth, and cultural services.”

The Library is involved in a process to refine this goal and to provide recommendations to the Council on how to proceed. The Library Board, Library 2010 Legal Reserve Board, and boards from Parks and Recreation and ArtCentric will hold two joint meetings to help identify community needs in these areas, examine key services that meet those needs, and recommend steps the City can take to ensure that these services and programs are available. We will be looking at collaboration and partnerships, improved communication, modifi cation of services to meet community needs, and funding issues. We hope to be able to make recommendations to City Council in December or January.

I am very pleased that there is a Council goal recognizing the importance of our services. Among the indicators of a healthy community are strong libraries, beautiful parks, good recreation programs, and high quality services in the arts. Looking together to the future will help ensure that Corvallis will continue to be a great place to live.
