Message from Library Director Carolyn Rawles-Heiser

January / February 2005
The new Alsea Community Library is nearing completion and should be open later this winter. This beautiful new building will serve as a community center as well as a library and will feature expanded hours as well as more books, magazines, programs, and computers. One of the best features for users of the old Alsea Library will be comfortable places where patrons can actually sit down and browse through materials!

This new building is possible because of the efforts of Alsea Community Effort (ACE), which has been working for over 10 years to build a new library in Alsea. Local communities are responsible for providing their own buildings, and ACE has been successful in receiving grants and encouraging donations to build the new facility. The Library, Friends of the Library, Benton County Foundation, and the Library Foundation are supplying all the shelving and furnishings, as well as an expanded library collections. Congratulations to ACE and to everyone in Alsea on your success! The library system is thrilled to be able to upgrade our services in Alsea.

Monroe is also looking to improve their library facility, currently located in Monroe City Hall. A small expansion of their current library will add about 350 square feet. The community is also starting the process to plan for a new library facility which will meet the needs of their population for years to come. Monroe has seen greatly expanded use of their building in the last couple of years, and their current library, even with the added square footage, is just too small long term.
