How Do I Become a Volunteer?
Welcome Volunteers!
This information is for those interested in volunteer opportunities at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. It gives you some answers to commonly asked questions about our Volunteer Program. Please think seriously about what you wish to contribute as well as what you hope to gain in becoming a Corvallis-Benton County Public Library volunteer.
What time commitment is expected of me as a Corvallis-Benton County Public Library volunteer?
Most volunteer positions require a regular time commitment. The number of shifts varies depending on the position. Check-in volunteers require a minimum two hours per week commitment while a program assistant may only volunteer a few times per year. For most positions, a minimum commitment of six months is required.
Do I have to have a set schedule?
Yes! For most positions, employees need to know when to expect volunteer help. Some jobs requiring use of specific work areas or equipment, especially computers, need to be shared by both staff and volunteers. Volunteer schedules are posted in each department.
How old do I need to be before I can volunteer?
Applicants who are 14 years of age and up will be considered for volunteer positions.
Does the Library accept “Community Service” Volunteers?
Unfortunately the Library is unable to accept court ordered volunteers. The volunteer program at the Library is looking for people who want to make a minimum commitment of six months. Most court mandated volunteering does not fit into this structure. However, the Library will accept student volunteers who are fulfilling community service requirements for their school.
I'm interested in volunteering. What happens next?
- Fill out the Volunteer Application and drop it off at any Library service desk or mail it to the address listed on the application.
- The Volunteer Coordinator will contact you for an interview.
- After the interview, successful candidates will meet with the Volunteer Coordinator for orientation and to train with staff in the division where they will work.
How long does it take before you can start volunteering?
On average, it takes two weeks from the time we receive your Volunteer Application to be placed as a volunteer and begin training. At the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, we strive to provide a meaningful and enjoyable volunteer experience for those who wish to share their time and skills with us. Thank you for your interest in our program!
