Question/Comment: Are patrons allowed to use cell phones in the library? Answer: We recognize that cell phones have transformed the way we communicate with each other. They are a wonderful convenience. But at the same time, some cell phone users are oblivious to the fact that many others are bothered by being forced to overhear loud personal conversations. It is especially bothersome to many library users who look to the library as a place for study and quiet contemplation. While most parts of the library are not really "quiet" any more, and users are encouraged to communicate in normal tones of voice, we also try to provide for the needs of those who desire quiet. Thus, the library has tried to balance this by providing two cell phone-free areas in the library--the Belluschi Wing and the adult computer area. In addition, if cell phone use disturbs others anywhere in the library at any time, staff will ask that the person take the conversation to the outer lobby if it is brought to their attention. |
